Blame Fixing. The Toxic Workplace

There is nothing more detrimental (notice the word mental in this common term) to a workplace than if its focus is ‘blame fixing’. Bad managers exist for many reasons. Poor training, lack of respect for other humans and of course some are just plain stupid or nasty. Their superiors allow them to exist for many reasons. Excuses abound on this front as well. Too busy to deal with it is their favorite. More likely they are checking their investments online or worse, like sucking up to their superiors. No time to monitor, advise or support their underlings’. These really ‘toxic’ managers would sell out all their subordinates in an instant!

Their approach is to fire them if things get out of hand especially if either the internal or external negative feedback gets annoying. In other words, if a toxic workplace is allowed to prevail in your organization you can be sure that the incompetence flows upwards all the way to the top! So what are your options? (subscribe to see the rest of the article) Contacting HR for a ‘confidential discussion on your working environment’. Can be perilous unless other employees agree with you. Escalate to your managers manager. Deathly especially if already know your manager would throw you and the rest of the people around you under the bus at a moment’s notice! Quit. You may have family or financial obligations or both that make this a horrible option. Win the lottery (unlikely solution but buy an inexpensive ticket on the big jackpots occasionally anyway). In reality Outside professional help is one of the better options. Books on dealing with managerial incompetence and difficult people might provide some action points.

Meditation, maybe and Prayer for those who are religious. You are not alone although that isn’t much comfort,. Too little time is spent on monitoring workplace conditions but I would try sending anonymous letters to the health and services organizations in your area. Maybe you need a union! In the end you are your own BFF so do whatever you need to do to make your workplace a more healthy environment. You spend a lot of time there so it will impact both your mental and physical health if you don’t deal with it.
