You know what I am talking about. I published my first article on this issue in the UBC internal newspaper more than 30 years ago.
In essence the article criticized companies for spending millions if not tens of millions on computer hardware and software (including massive ERP projects) but as the project stutters they either cut or downgrade their investments in training ‘humans’ on how to use them! Still true today.
When the project is delayed or new management feels that they must force changes to the plan to demonstrate their worthiness you will hear (just a few examples) that the ‘scope’ needs to be reduced to meet project deadlines, there is a ‘good’ help facility in the software, there will be a ‘super’ help desk, we will deal with this is phase 2. Any of this sound familiar.
We now have a new player thus this article. AI. AI is now touted as the ‘greatest thing since sliced bread’ to solve all of our training and support issues. Good luck with that one! I have to say, having spent some time with AI apps to see what they could offer, I found that the response time to a question is a lot faster than searching for it in a help system (of course it is) or waiting hours for a help desk analyst to call me back and I found that most of the answers were in fact acceptable (because I knew the answer to the question before I asked it but what if you don’t’).
One of the challenges is that you really need to know what to ask and how to formulate the question but these are not what should concern you.
What should concern you is what will happen to you in your organization if you ‘act’ on one of the responses and you bring down your financial or HR systems! (drama I know but consider your workplace and how they deal with work related issues and employee errors).
Will your manager or other parts of the organization support you if the answer was wrong and you acted on it? Sure. How many shots do you get at this? See the article on toxic workplaces and blame fixing if you really want to know.
There are many reasons for this. Some potential explanations could include ...

AI, of course I will use it .. maybe. It depends.
